What is an elevator pitch?

An elevator pitch is a condensed, easy to understand version of a business pitch that is delivered in the time it takes to ride an elevator. As innovators, you should be prepared to give a pitch any time, including during an elevator ride. However, boiling down your solution to a paragraph and, ultimately, to a single, concise statement is often challenging and requires constant practice and feedback. The famous mathematician, Blaise Pascal recognized this with a statement that roughly translates to, “I would have written a shorter letter, but I did not have the time.”

Why Elevator Pitch Contest?

An elevator pitch is a critical part of the entrepreneurial process. As competition for research and investment funds increases, young scientists will need to effectively articulate their idea and do so in a manner that is persuasive and precise. Our contest allows students to present their ideas in three to five minutes to a panel of experts and potential financiers at the American Society for Nutrition’s 'Nutrition 2018' annual meeting to be held in Boston from June 9–12.

Who is conducting this contest?

The contest is being conducted by Sight and Life in partnership with the American Society for Nutrition.

Sight and Life is a humanitarian nutrition think tank working toward a world free of malnutrition. We champion the global fight against malnutrition by advancing research, sharing best practices, and mobilizing support. For further information, please download the Sight and Life magazine or visit

The American Society for Nutrition (ASN) is the principal United States society for professional researchers and practitioners in the field of nutrition.
